"The incredibly detailed future world that Haldeman has created is fascinating and.both spellbinding and funny."--Science Fiction Review

A "story of the near future" from a Hugo and Nebula Award winner--and one of the most prestigious science fiction writers ever. At the end of the 21st century, many people believe the only real hope for humanity lies in the Worlds: 41 orbiting satellites housing half a million people. Though the creation of cheap fusion has undermined the Worlds as a source of solar energy, they still welcome many tourists and offer plenty of raw materials for export. For example, New New York is almost pure steel. And, from that city comes Marianne O'Hara, a brilliant political-science student who has elected to spend a postgraduate year on Earth--where she unwittingly finds herself caught up in a group of fanatics looking to start another revolution in America.even if it means the destruction of the planet.

Patas Monkeys - Newborn Baby - Burnet Park Zoo - Syracuse

Patas Monkeys - Newborn Baby - Burnet Park Zoo - Syracuse

Here is the newest member of this monkey family. This newborn baby patas monkey is a girl. It was several weeks before officials at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park were able to determine the gender of the baby monkey because the zoo maintains a hands off approach with primates. Parents Addie and M.J , welcomed the youngster in the morning hours of January 7, 2011. The baby monkey was named D.J. in memory of long time zoo employee, Doris Johnson, who recently passed away. Now a little info on patas monkeys: Habitat in the wild: West Africa to Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. They like being in open country, mostly savannas and steppes (treeless plains) to woodland fringes ( they like areas with tall grass). It is the closest relative of the vervet monkey. Length: 23 1/2 to 35 inches long. Tail length: 17 to 28 inches. Weight: 22 to 29 lbs. Adult males are considerably larger than adult females. Patas monkeys are large and tall, very slender and guantly built. Adults have a moustache and whiskers which are usually white. Their body fur is reddish gray with pale underparts. They have a light band on the forehead and a dark dorsal stripe. The eyes and nostrils are very close together. They can hold as much food in their cheeks as they can in their stomachs. They are the most terrestrial (ground dwelling) and fastest of all primates, running at speeds of up to 35 mph. They live in harem groups, with one adult male, several females and their young. The male stays on the periphery of the group which allows him to distract predators. An exception to the rule of big, aggressive Old World Monkeys, the patas will run away rather than fight. They are mostly quiet monkeys. Females and young have a restrained vocabulary of hoots and chirrups, as well as low whistles, and a repeated guttural cough. Lifespan in the wild: 15-20 years. In captivity: 20 plus. Diet in the wild: fruits, insects, leaves, roots and bird eggs. Zoo diet: fruits, yams, carrots, greens, monkey chow and sunflower seeds. They are located in the Adaptations Exibit at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, One Conservation Place (off South Wilbur Ave) in Syracuse, NY.
